Van Wert County Occupational Health Clinic

Partner Spotlight: Van Wert County Hospital’s Occupational Health Clinic

Occupational HealthJanuary 30, 2017

The Van Wert Occupational Health Clinic officially opened last week! The clinic will serve local employers, providing pre-screening physicals, drug screens, safety exams, injury care, and more. We had the opportunity to sit down with the clinic’s Medical Director and Nurse Practitioner, who shared a glimpse into life at the new office.

Meet Kelly Straley, Nurse Practitioner Van Wert Occupational Health Clinic

Why is Occupational Health important to you?
The clinic provides a full spectrum of occupational medicine services to help companies ensure their workers remain healthy. Occupational Health brings together the needs of both patients and businesses, which is why it is unique from any other type of practice.

Tell us about your typical day at the office.
As with many professions, there is no “typical day” in medicine! I treat patients who are sick or injured and do pre-employment physicals and respiratory clearance exams. I also spend time staying up-to-date on health and safety guidelines for various professions, including firefighters, bus drivers, and commercial truck drivers. My job is very fulfilling, knowing that I’m helping the local workforce to remain healthy and productive.

What is the best part of your job?
I wanted to become a nurse practitioner in order to help people feel better and to be a true advocate for patients’ overall health and wellbeing. The best part of my job as a nurse practitioner at the Occupational Health Clinic is that I get to do exactly that! I enjoy working with a great team of competent and caring co-workers at the clinic; they push me to strive for the best for our patients.

What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
Van Wert County Hospital identified a lack of occupational health services in our area and brought a team together to build this needed resource in our community. Being part of building this clinic in my hometown means a lot to me. I’m proud to be part of the team of healthcare providers helping to keep our community strong and making a real contribution to our local workforce.

What do you do for fun outside of work?
I enjoy being a volunteer for my church and participating in women’s Bible Studies. My husband and I enjoy taking our two rambunctious dogs for walks, spending time with friends, and we also flip houses in our spare time.

Van Wert Occupational Health Clinic Meet Dr. Jocelyn Wray, Medical Director

Why is Occupational Health important to you?
Occupational Health is important to me for many reasons. It is consistent with the mission of my speciality in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. We strive to get people back to work and play.

Tell us about your typical day at the office.
There is no “typical day” for my particular practice. Some days include meetings – at 7:30am, noon or late afternoon. I see patients between those times. The end of the day involves finishing documentation for patient visits and answering telephone messages.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is working with patients and other health care workers. Providing health care is a process and it takes a team; it’s been an enjoyable journey.

What has been your greatest career accomplishment?
My greatest career accomplishment is difficult to articulate. Anyone who recovers from illness or injury; any worker who gets back to work; any patient who returns home; any athlete who gets back to their sport. These are accomplishments which I have been privileged to be a part of.

What do you do for fun outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy many things. I enjoy spending time with my family. My children are involved in various activities, and I enjoy going to those events and practices. I love music and reading, and I participate in AWANA and music programs at my church.
